The best six doctors anywhere
And no one can deny it
Are sunshine, water, rest, and air
Exercise and diet.
These six will gladly you attend
If only you are willing
Your mind, they'll ease
Your will, they'll mend
And charge you not a shilling.

- nursery rhyme by Wayne Fields, What the River Knows, 1990

Introduction

Our youth programs focus on empowering young people to make healthy, positive, life-long changes in how they interact with the environment, themselves, and others. This process is achieved through a dynamic range of hands-on activities that foster:

  • Ecological literacy, or ecoliteracy - achieved through environmental stewardship and sustainable agriculture practices.
  • Partnerships - a diversity of partnerships with other youth, adults, and community organizations.
  • Response-ability - strategies that empower youth to transform their lives and to grow as leaders through health awareness activities and peer mentoring.
  • Service - community service learning projects like habitat restoration and food production and distribution.

Collectively, these activities lead participants to meaningful and measurable outcomes of improved long-term personal health. This in turn leads to positive changes in the overall health of the community and the environment.
