Food Access: Urban Produce Stands

Introduction

Urban produce stands are an increasingly popular model for introducing fresh produce into low income neighborhoods which have difficulty supporting supermarkets, small retail markets, restaurants and farmers markets. Non-profit organizations, schools with garden programs, and small farmers are setting up individual stands which sell produce they have grown themselves or have procured from other local farmers thereby providing under-served communities with much needed access to locally produced fresh fruits and vegetables.

Benefits of Produce Stands

  • Reduced management, coordination and permitting costs
  • Small space requirements allow more site options directly within under-served communities
  • Ability to meet localized community (neighborhood) needs for fresh, culturally appropriate produce
  • Reduced transportation requirements for local residents and local growers
  • Creates community gathering place
  • Opportunity for health/nutrition education
  • Closer relationship between the consumer and farmer (often direct with the farmer)
  • Direct sales reduce costs for consumers and allow farmers to receive more money

Our Urban Farm Stand Projects

Soil Born Farms has two new urban farm stand projects offering locally grown produce for the 2008 season. The farm stands offer certified organic produce grown by Soil Born Farms as well as produce from other small local farmers that meet our specific production requirements. These stands serve to meet food access needs in under-served neighborhoods throughout Sacramento and provide a new sales outlet for local farmers. Locations and hours here: Head Start farm stands

Our American River Ranch farm stand opens on May 31!
Hours: Saturdays 8am - 1pm. The farm stand features fresh, seasonal, local and organic vegetables and fruit. Stop by every week and enjoy a country experience in the city. We encourage you to bike or walk to the ranch and bring your shopping bag. Cash and EBT accepted.
