Green Corps Job Program

We have a powerful potential in our youth, and we must have the courage to change old ideas and practices so that we may direct their power toward good ends.

~ Mary McLeod Bethune

Youth participants in Soil Born Farms’ Green Corps Jobs Program gain the foundational skills needed to move into the new green economy.  Unfortunately, many end up working in low paying fast food or retail jobs.  Soil Born Farms is looking to change this by partnering with green businesses in the Sacramento area that are interested in hiring youth who graduate from our Green Jobs Program.

The Green Corps program provides local underserved high school seniors with work opportunities focused on sustainable urban agriculture, environmental stewardship, health education, and food access. For most underserved youth, opportunities to gain exposure to the emerging green economy are beyond reach. Green Corps addresses this issue by giving youth work experience in real world green projects, consistent professional mentors and on-going technical trainings that collectively allow them to develop individual passions and career direction. Once youth complete the Green Corp program they are ready to move onto more permanent work experiences in the world of green jobs. Partnerships with like minded employers are of paramount importance to the success of the youth in the program.

Our goal is for all youth participants to enter employment or higher education after their Green Corp experience. While a variety of degree and certificate options related to green careers exist, there remains a lack of job opportunities that keep youth engaged in the green economy. If you or somebody you know works in a green business and would like to provide an opportunity for Green Corp graduates to continue their employment experience in the Green Job sector, please call (916) 363-9685 or email This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Funding for Green Corps is provided by the Sacramento Employment and Training Agency (SETA).

Green Corps Job Program Overview

 green_corps_3

Green Corps is a job program for young adults who wish to build leadership skills through community-focused projects.   Our primary considerations for participating youth are their personal motivation and attitude.  We are looking for youth who want to build job and life skills, have a positive attitude, and wish to help their community.  In addition, it helps if youth have experience working outdoors or within a team and have an interest in one of our four project areas (sustainable urban agriculture, environmental stewardship, health education, and food access).

Youth will be expected to gain skills in the following areas:

  • Understand and be able to teach others the basics of sustainable gardening and farming.
  • Successfully plant, weed, harvest, and pack fruits and vegetables.
  • Understand Sacramento food systems and local food access concerns.
  • Understand the importance of sustainable agriculture to human health and the environment.
  • Educate local communities about nutrition, health, cooking and sustainability.
  • Lead healthy cooking demonstrations for the public.
  • Help conduct a farmer’s market.
  • Lead younger students in gardening, cooking, or exploration activities.
  • Work well within a team of peers.
  • Assume a leadership role in youth-led community service projects.
  • Act as an advocate for Soil Born Farms.

Applicants should be willing to learn new skills, maintain a positive attitude, and work outdoors for several hours during varied weather conditions.

Our goal is for all Green Corps participants to:

  • Achieve a high school/college diploma or occupational certificate, and
  • Obtain placement in employment or higher education
